State Park
Land set aside and managed by a state agency to preserve cultural and natural areas and to provide opportunities for recreation and education. Early parks were established because of their unique geological or exceptional natural features, while later parks emphasized recreation as well as conservation. State parks were often planned to be closer to population centers than many of the larger national parks.
