ALERT: Due to inclement weather this program (tour + panel) has been rescheduled for October 23. Apologies for the inconvenience.

Guide: Brice Maryman, ASLA, LEED AP

Maryman is a senior landscape architect at SvR Design in Seattle. He specializes in historic preservation and urban design.

This tour is offered in partnership with the Freeway Park Association.

Executed by Lawrence Halprin & Associates under the design direction of Angela Danadjieva, the first phase of this 5.5-acre park opened in 1976 and remains one of the most compelling treatises on post-War modern landscape architecture and has had profound impacts for open spaces around the country.

When Interstate 5 was cut through Seattle's hilly terrain, it created a chasm that physically divided the City's downtown. Aware of Halprin’s 1966 book, Freeways, Seattle officials commissioned Halprin's office to reconnect the divided city with a park. It was, as a recent PBS documentary noted, one of 10 Parks that Changed America, showing how cities can build over a highway to heal the fabric of the city.

Join landscape architect Brice Maryman for a guided tour of the four connected spaces within Freeway Park, and a discussion of the history, successes and failures, and future of the unique landscape.

The Freeway Park Association has coordinated a panel discussion on the future of Freeway Park to follow the Halprin Tour. The panel will include tour guide, Brice Maryman (Senior Landscape Architect at SvR Design), Riisa Conklin (Executive Director of the Freeway Park Association), and Victoria Schoenburg (Manager, Center City Parks, Seattle Parks & Recreation). Iain Robertson, Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Washington at Seattle, will moderate. Questions and discussion from attendees are encouraged. The discussion will begin at 12:30 and last one hour. The Sky Lounge at the Horizon House (overlooking Skyline Park) will host the event. Light refreshments will be provided. All are welcome.

This tour is part of a larger program intended to celebrate the life and legacy of landscape architect Lawrence Halprin. Learn more about the program and view other tours by returning to the event page for What's Out There Weekend: The Public Landscapes of Lawrence Halprin.
