Gardens Designed by John Nolen (1869 - 1937)

I am seeking information on gardens designed by John Nolen.

A garden he reportedly designed in Cambridge, Massachusetts is in jeopardy of being demolished and the author seeks to know if this may be one of the few extent examples of his work.

The Vestry of Saint James's Parish in Cambridge and the Diocese of Boston has recently voted to pursue the demolition of a church garden designed between 1915 and 1926 by John Nolen, in order to build condominiums on the site. The garden is a simple design; a central lawn bordered by imported flowering materials and laid out in a manner reminiscent of America's Estate Era.

The garden was restored according to his planting plans in 1982-3. John Nolen was the first City Planner for the City of Cambridge and among the first City Planners in the United States. Although he is best known for his planning of new towns such as Mariemont, OH and new suburbs in the 1920's, 30's and 40's, he was also a landscape architect.

I urgently seek any information on his garden design work in order to help establish the importance of this small example.

If anyone has information about John Nolen’s garden work please contact:
