Guides are an expansion of free What’s Out There database of the nation’s shared landscape legacy – currently features more than 1,700 sites, 900 designer profiles and 10,000 images

Washington, D.C. (November 18, 2014) – The Cultural Landscape Foundation (TCLF) today announced that What’s Out There Denver, the first in a new series of free Web-based, city-focused guides, will be unveiled Friday, November 21 at a reception at the Denver Botanic Gardens in conjunction with the annual meeting of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA). The series is an expansion of the free, profusely illustrated What’s Out There online database of the nation’s shared landscape legacy, which currently features more than 1,700 site, 900 designer profiles and 10,000 images.  This is the first phase in the series and will be upgraded over time to allow users to build individual itineraries, create links between cities based on designers, the types and styles of landscapes, and other features.  The guide, made possible by Project Partners ASLA, the Colorado ASLA Chapter, and the College of Architecture and Planning at the University of Colorado, Denver, and support from Design Workshop, will continue to grow as additional sites are added to the What’s Out There database.  The guide also features What's Nearby, a GPS-enabled function that locates all sites in the database within a 25-mile radius of any given location.

“The Denver parks and open space network is an unrivaled local design interpretation that leverages the unique geography of the surrounding Rocky Mountain range and expansive American Prairie grasslands,” said TCLF President and Founder Charles A. Birnbaum. “The goal of this guide, which spans more than a century of landscape architecture design, is to make this legacy visible and easily accessible through laptops, iPhones, tablets and other devices.”

The guide, designed by Oviatt Media, includes an introduction to Denver’s distinct designed landscape legacy, an initial 64 sites, each accompanied by six to eight images (many taken by Denver-based photographer Brian Thomson) and a 250-word description, and 23 profiles of associated designers.  This is the latest expansion of the What's Out There program, one of TCLF’s main initiative, and joins What’s Out There Weekends, featuring free expert-led tours in different cities and regions nationally, and What’s Out There guidebooks – for destinations including Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, Richmond, VA, and other locations – that are available through TCLF’s Web site for purchase as print publications or as free downloadable PDF’s.
