Hank White has pursued an interest in landscape since his childhood. Led by the conviction that the designed landscape is among the most perpetual forms of cultural expression and environmental accountability, his work seeks to discover new solutions to the increasing complexities of human settlements and cultural landscapes. As founder of HMWhite - his 23-year old Manhattan based urban design and landscape architectural firm - Mr. White has been responsible for numerous highly acclaimed and award-winning landscape design projects – diverse in type, environmental context and global locale. He has worked on 3 different continents employing sustainable design and place-making strategies while embracing and integrating relevant cultural and ethnic traditions. Through design intelligence and ecological engineering principles, his work strives to improve lifestyles for both public and private domains. His environmental stewardship extends into his board membership on civic and environmentally based non-profit organizations, in addition to his appointment to Harvard’s Design School’s Alumni Council. In association with his firm’s work, Mr. White was recently nominated in 2014 for Cooper Hewitt’s National Design Award. His work has been widely published and recognized with numerous national and international design awards, including honors from the American Society of Landscape Architects, American Institute of Architects, European Centre for Architecture Art Design, Urban Land Institute, NYC Public Design Commission and Time Magazine’s Best Design of the Year. Clients and communities have come to expect his distinctive landscape designs to be of consistent clarity of vision: site-specific, artful, compassionate, timeless, and ultimately enhancing the quality of the human experience.
