A Garden on All Levels
Jan Johnsen of Johnsen Landscapes and Pools

Featured in Jan Johnsen's new book Heaven is a Garden, this steeply sloped and wooded hillside property has been carefully sculpted over nearly twenty years into a multi-level, richly planted retreat. Starting with a beautiful view, meticulously designed stone stairs descend past a soothing double cascade, perennial flower borders, a woodland Japanese-inspired garden, a rain garden and a unique vegetable garden. The stone walls, pathways and furnishings reflect a great attention to detail, and there are inviting niches and places to relax. more photos

This twelve-acre Westchester estate marries the owner’s deep appreciation for nature with a formal aesthetic in keeping with the home’s stately Edwardian architectural legacy. The gardens feature formally arrayed native plants that lead to a wilder landscape beyond, including a seeded meadow with native wildflowers and grasses that attract birds and butterflies. Stylized groupings of native woodland vegetation along the entry drive complete this harmonious landscape. more photos

This remarkable, late 19th century Shingle home is the center of a multi-level garden sanctuary nestled among stunning bedrock outcrops and mature trees. Despite the precipitously sloping site, a series of elegant, family friendly garden rooms are seamlessly connected and lushly planted. An exquisite stone fireplace warms the main terrace, and sculptural plant masses wrap winding staircases and stone walls. more photos

Iconic Manhattan Courtyard and Rooftop
Hank White of HMWhite

Two New York Landscapes, inside and out: Created as a serene homage to the Hudson River Valley woodland landscape, the New York Times Building Lobby Garden, which provides a welcoming escape from the hectic city environment, was designed in collaboration with Vancouver, BC-based landscape architect Cornelia Oberlander. The mature grove of native Paper Birch on an undulating woodland Sedge floor contrasts with its steel and glass surroundings, while the minimalist design complements the building’s design.  State-of-the-art 3D computer simulated microclimate analysis helped determine the environmental growing conditions. And at MIMA, two gardens terraces totaling 13,500 SF on the third floor of a sixty-story mid-town residential building offer diverse and spacious exterior social spaces that function as the new “town green.” Columnar Hornbeam groves and abstracted meadow landforms are the unifying design elements for the various open spaces and pathways.  A central sloping lawn reflects an interior pool and is flanked by elevated sunning decks that transform into an outdoor movie theater and evening event space. more photos
