Garden Dialogues 2018: Pasadena, CA

Pasadena, CA

Hindry House was designed by the seminal Pasadena architects (and brothers) Arthur and Alfred Heineman in 1910 at the height of the California Arts and Crafts movement. Overlooking the Arroyo Seco in Pasadena’s historic Prospect Park neighborhood, the dramatically sited Mission Revival home, the most intact and authentic remaining example of the Heineman’s work, is considered the pinnacle of their residential designs. The idyllic enclave on just over one acre exemplifies the regional Craftsman style in both its architecture and its landscape.

In the late 1960s, acclaimed Caltech mathematician Dr. Albert Hibbs and his wife, Marka, purchased the house. They hired local landscape architect Courtland Paul to design what they described as “an old swimmin’ hole.” Paul integrated the pool with the landscape by siting it near a magnificent native Live Oak. He surrounded the pool with California Sycamores and large and small boulders from the nearby Arroyo. The widely published project was one of the first “natural-style” pools in the country.

In 2014 Lisa Gimmy Landscape Architecture (LGLA) was engaged by the new owners to document and rehabilitate the property’s long-neglected landscape. Kelly Sutherlin McLeod Architecture undertook the home’s restoration, and LGLA worked closely with the firm to research the property’s history; the results became the framework for the landscape's rehabilitation and design.

The work was both sensitive and extensive. Pool and hardscape restoration required extant boulders and stones to be numbered and photo-documented to ensure an accurate reinstallation. Existing trees were documented, and healthy specimens were protected. Drainage issues that had compromised the structural integrity of the house were corrected; the addition of a dry stream provides for the infiltration of roof water and runoff. A more resilient and sustainable plant palette that respects the original palettes and historical relationships was created. A reinterpretation of Paul’s original fire pit and a new spa were integrated adjacent to the historic pool area.

Hindry House was designated a City of Pasadena Historic Monument in 2012, and the property is a contributor to the historic district that was nominated for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (1983.) In 2018 the project team was honored with a City of Pasadena Historic Preservation Award for the landscape rehabilitation.
