history continued

Recently, Lee County contracted a landscape and arborist company to provide maintenance for Boca Grande’s Banyan Tree Allée. The care includes yearly structural pruning, bi-annual fertilizer application, and limited aerial root pruning to allow the roots to extend to the ground. A young banyan tree was planted in early 2007 to replace the tree lost after Hurricane Charley.

While many of the original trees planted by the American Agricultural Chemical Company no longer exist, the Banyan Tree Allée stands almost completely intact as a reminder of the island’s early development. Moreover, the massive allée continues to convey the strength and complexity of the natural world.
