Slot House, Los Altos Hills, CA - 10:00 to 11:30 AM

Sited in the midst of an oak woodland in the Los Altos Hills, the striking, modernist Slot House called for a decisive but restrained approach to its landscape plan, with colors and textures that stand up to the home’s bold forms yet soften its angularity. A minimal palette of warm tones on the house and paving, pops of red in plants and an architectural fountain, and a living roof with succulent garden add interest and invite exploration while deftly integrating the home into its hillside site.

Hardscape, plantings and a three-tiered fountain direct arrivals from the auto court through the home as it descends on its sloping grade, then outside again to an expansive view into the Foothills Open Space Preserve. Porcelain tile terraces and patios, a fire feature and infinity-edge hot tub extend the living spaces and offer varied experiences for large gatherings as well as intimate moments. Gravel paths leading to a secluded seating area and bench overlook offer a sense of discovery and maximize exploration of this special site.

This Garden Dialogue will be led by Kate Stickley of Arterra Landscape Architects.

1.5 LA CES™ professional development hours will be available to attendees.

Due to limited parking, attendees should be prepared to meet at a predetermined location and carpool to the sites.

Nestled In, Los Altos Hills, CA - 2:00 to 3:30 PM

Nestled into a one-acre site, this existing shingled house was in need of an update to suit a modern family. The original tennis court and small pool cut the house off from the wooded hillside covered in redwoods and oaks, separating the house from the landscape. The clients desired to make the house more livable and to create new outdoor living spaces, realized by a new pool, outdoor entertainment area with pizza oven, BBQ grill & fire pit, a separate building for an art studio, orchard and small kitchen garden, and plenty of space for the kids to explore.

Arterra worked closely with Greg Klein Architects to site the art studio and pool and create a series of the rooms for the family to enjoy. A semicircular path encloses the lawn to provide a park-like setting that was once a fenced-in tennis court. The geometric simplicity of the path and lawn along with a bosque of tall sycamore trees compliment the classic architectural style of the house.

Several water features provide a soft soundtrack of falling water; one at the entry to the house to welcomes people in, while others off the dining and living rooms offer ambient sound. Plantings with seasonal interest are clustered close to the house while native plantings weave through oaks and redwoods to settle this home into the land.
