history continued
The seed for the Washington Park Arboretum’s Eucalyptus Tree (Eucalyptus perriniana) was accessioned into the University of Washington’s collection on July 26, 1966 and the tree was planted on August 16, 1968. When Colvos Creek Nursery opened on Vashon Island in 1975, the Arboretum’s Eucalyptus Tree became the sole source for the nursery’s national mail-order and seedling plantings of the species. Since then, the parent tree has produced well over 1,000 new trees, which includes several large, mature trees on Vashon Island.
Today, the Arboretum is managed cooperatively by the City of Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation and the University of Washington, College of Forest Resources. The Arboretum Foundation also lends support. With over 4,800 species and cultivated varieties on its grounds, the 230-acre arboretum and public park is a unique horticultural amenity and public resource in the Pacific Northwest.
