Lake ElizabethPittsburgh, Pennsylvania history continued Only one phase of construction was completed in 1967, leaving the multi-level, interlocking pools; the island’s water jets; and the boathouse unrealized. However, the trapezoidal shape, carefully edged in concrete with a richly textured embedded aggregate, was completed. Stream boulders were embedded in the concrete lake bottom and a pair of arched pedestrian bridges made of concrete and steel were installed to connect visitors to the lake’s island and outlining Pittsburgh’s skyline and the park’s own Civil War Memorial in the far and near distance.
Surrounding the lake is a walk, sometimes following the edge of the water and sometimes leaving the edge so that grass can grow down to the water. This gives the stroller modulated view of the water. In several places, where topography permits, the walk has been depressed below the lake to allow children to stand and play with their boats at waist height. |
