Barbara Deutsch, FASLA
CEO, Landscape Architecture Foundation


Barbara DeutschBarbara Deutsch, FASLA, is CEO of the Landscape Architecture Foundation (LAF) since 2009. She has a diverse background in both the private and not-for-profit sector, bringing ten years of award-winning marketing experience from IBM before making a career change to become a landscape architect. Showing value has been consistent in her life work and was influential in the development of LAF’s Landscape Performance Series long-term strategic research initiative.

Prior to LAF, Deutsch worked on re-greening cities from Hong Kong to Washington, D.C. She served as an Associate Director for BioRegional Development Group’s One Planet Communities program in Washington, D.C., to deliver zero carbon, zero waste, livable communities. As Senior Director of Casey Trees she led the 2002 D.C. Street Tree Inventory, Citizen Forester Program, 1425 K Street Green Roof Demonstration Project, and the award-winning Environmental Protection Agency grant “The Green Build-out Model: Quantifying the Stormwater Management Benefits of Trees and Green Roofs in Washington, D.C.”

At LAF, Deutsch is committed to increasing the influence and impact of landscape architects to help solve the defining issues of our time. She is honored to work with an incredible network of leaders to answer the 21st Century Call to Action and cultivate the next generation through LAF’s research, scholarships, and leadership programs.

Deutsch earned a B.S. in Commerce from the University of Virginia, a M.L.A. from the University of Washington, and was awarded a Loeb Fellowship from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. In 2019, LAF was awarded the ASLA Medal of Excellence.
