Marvels of Modernism: Miller Garden

Miller Garden

Architects Eero Saarinen and Kevin Roche, interior designer Alexander Girard, and landscape architect Dan Kiley, working closely with their clients unified the landscape and the interior of the Miller home through orderly and highly structured elements with an emphasis on orthogonal geometry.

Considered to be Kiley’s masterwork residential commission, he planned the property on an axis defined by an allée of honey locust trees that extends to the limits of the property. The property served as the family’s residence until Mrs. Miller’s death in February, 2008. The family hopes to preserve the 13-acre property as a public site for educational purposes. With proper stewardship and endowment, the Miller House and Garden will stand as an icon of Modernism for future generations.
