Hato Rey, Puerto Rico
El Monte HelpCourtesy Mery Bingen Get InvolvedThe public can help preserve El Monte simply by recognizing the place, understanding its far-reaching historic significance, and acknowledging that its landscape architecture (as designed by Sasaki and implemented by Randolph) is a major part of what makes El Monte apartment buildings a unique and valuable place within the urban fabric of the city of San Juan and the Caribbean. A comprehensive history of the landscape will help establish a thorough understanding of the original design intentions and insure that future interventions are sympathetic to the original plan. El Monte apartments’ neighborhood association (Condominio El Monte Norte), the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico, and the Historic Preservation Office are creating a partnership to pursue further research about the site and its designers. The consortium is being led by the Graduate School of Landscape Architecture at Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico, in conjunction with the School of Architecture and the local DOCOMOMO Chapter. Individuals interested in offering assistance in the documentation and preservation of these landscapes can do so by forwarding information on similar resources or information regarding other local designs by these two landscape architects.
