Charlene was a founding partner of Hess, Roise and Company in 1990. Based in Minneapolis with projects nationwide, the historical consulting firm specializes in National Register nominations, cultural resource surveys, preservation planning, interpretive exhibits, historic structure and historic landscape reports, archival research, documentation studies, Section 106/Section 4(f) compliance, and historic tax credit applications. After serving as the firm’s president from 1997 until 2020, she sold the business to two long-time coworkers. She continues to consult with Hess Roise and other clients.

Qualifying as a Historian and Architectural Historian under the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications Standards, Charlene has worked on a broad spectrum of cultural resources ranging from bridges and aircraft hangars to high-style commercial buildings and houses. She coauthored a successful National Register nomination for Peavey Plaza, a pioneering 1970s landscape designed by M. Paul Friedberg, and advocated as a member of The Cultural Landscape Foundation’s board of directors to save this important landscape from demolition by the City of Minneapolis. Charlene has also been on the board of advisors of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the board of directors of Preservation Alliance of Minnesota (now Rethos) and Artspace Projects.
