Sonoma Vineyard
Marta Fry, Marta Fry Landscape Associates, with Paul Martinez, Gardener

Nestled at the base of Sonoma Mountain this 160-acre site – a modern villa in an agrarian setting – is the result of a fascinating eight-year collaboration. From the careful siting of the main house and ancillary structures to the patterned windrows, hedgerows, vineyards, and orchard grids, every aspect of this project fits within an overall patterned landscape. The palette of materials was selected to expand and strengthen the power of this agricultural vernacular and the result demonstrates strong horticultural expertise and great attention to detailing and craft.   more photos

Buena Vista Winery
James Lord and Roderick Wyllie, Surface Design Inc.

At Buena Vista Winery, founded in 1857 and California’s oldest, recently completed gardens celebrate the state’s wine making heritage. The original hand-dug caves are still on site and have been re-opened to visitors for tours after a reconstruction effort along with the visitor center, located inside the original wine press house, which provides access to the original champagne cellar. The new work by Surface Design unites the complex through the inventive use of contrasting stone work and judiciously curated planting palette. Buena Vista is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a California Historical Landmark.  more photos
