The plantings in our landscaped spaces are very much a part of our everyday lives, but they can also be living reminders of our country’s heritage. Either formal or vernacular, there are trees and plantings that witnessed historically important people and events that shaped our communities, culture, and nation. They stand as living witnesses of our country’s past and have the potential to bear witness to coming generations. The outdoor Heroes of Horticulture exhibit presents the stories and images of twenty-two sites across the country where living trees and other plantings connect you directly to moments in our nation’s history.
