Guides: Randy Gragg & Steven Koch (FASLA, PLA)
Randy Gragg heads the University of Oregon’s John Yeon Center for Architectural Studies, a program of the School of Architecture and Allied Arts located in Portland, Oregon. He is an experienced editor and journalist, focusing on art, architecture, and urban planning issues.
Steven Koch is the founding principal and lead designer at Koch Landscape Architecture in Portland, Oregon. His first professional landscape architecture position was in the Office of Lawrence Halprin between 1990 and 1996.
As founding members and current and past presidents of the non-profit Halprin Landscape Conservancy, both Gragg and Koch actively work to conserve Lawrence Halprin’s sequence of public parks. They will guide participants through the interconnected spaces and provide a brief history of the landscape and Halprin’s vision for the park, including a discussion of the notable public process involved in its design.
Time will be reserved at the end of the tour to discuss the value and challenges of maintaining Halprin’s legacy in Portland. Gragg and Koch can speak about ongoing efforts and next steps involved in preserving public space.
Two tours will be offered for this landscape. Participants may register for either time by clicking on the Register button below.
This tour is part of a larger program intended to celebrate the life and legacy of landscape architect Lawrence Halprin. Learn more about the program and view other tours by returning to the event page for What's Out There Weekend: The Public Landscapes of Lawrence Halprin.
