Exhibition Chronicling Hare & Hare Now on Display at the University of Missouri

An exhibition about the lasting impact of the Kansas City-based landscape architecture firm Hare & Hare is now on view in Columbia, Missouri. The father-and-son team of Sidney J. and S. Herbert Hare planned parks, residential grounds, and cities from 1910 through 1960.

The exhibition includes material from the Hare & Hare Business Records in the manuscript collection of the State Historical Society of Missouri’s Kansas City Research Center. Original plans, drawings, photographs, and documents represent many spaces Americans still enjoy today, including Kansas City's Country Club District and Forest Park Zoo in Fort Worth, Texas.

The exhibition runs through December 23, 2016, Tuesday-Friday, 8:00am- 4:45pm (Saturday, 8am-3:30pm) at the State Historical Society’s Columbia Research Center, located on the ground floor of Ellis Library on the University of Missouri Campus in Columbia, Missouri.

Serving as the guest curator for the exhibition is Carol Grove, an adjunct assistant professor of American art and architecture at the University of Missouri. Grove, along with architectural historian Cydney Millstein, is the co-author of an upcoming book on Hare & Hare.

The exhibition, which highlights the legacy of Hare and Hare over the course of their fifty-year career, is based on the forthcoming book on the father-and-son landscape architecture firm, to be published by the Library of American Landscape History in 2017. The William T. Kemper Foundation and the David R. Coffin Publication Grant provided generous funds for the forthcoming publication. Original drawings, plans, photographs and specific plant lists included in the exhibit are mostly from the Hare and Hare Papers, housed at the State Historical Society of Missouri-Kansas City. According to Dr. Carol Grove, curator of the exhibit, Hare and Hare "were engaged in the art and science of shaping environments."
