BBP covers 1.3 miles of Brooklyn’s East River shoreline and consists of 85 acres of sustainable waterfront park. Through a grassroots campaign the Brooklyn Bridge Park Coalition (now the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy) advocated to turn this former site of cargo operations into park land for the community, rather than commercial development. Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates was hired in 2004 to lead the extensive planning process. According to their website: “The park mediates a system of new and refurbished connections between the city and the river, becoming a vital urban threshold that provides space for a wide variety of activities and programming, all with spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline. Careful attention to the site's rich history and its extraordinary built and natural features ensures that this radical transformation creates an urban destination that is dynamic and engaging for generations to come.”

Pier 6 opened in 2010 featuring almost 7 acres of park land including a 1.6 acres playground, an underground rainwater retention system capable of holding up to 127,000 gallons of water for the park’s needs, and Flower Field. The field is “planted with a diverse array of native plants and trees, the meadows and lawns create a green oasis while offering spectacular views of New York Harbor”, says BBP’s website.

This Field Session is hosted in conjunction with the Courageous by Design symposium and will be led by Rebecca McMackin, Director of Horticulture at the Brooklyn Bridge Park. Click here for the full tour schedule.
