Saturday, May 20, 10:00 - 2:00pm | Montecito and Santa Barbara
Susan Van Atta, FASLA, of Van Atta Associates, Inc. and Ken Radtkey, AIA, of Blackbird Architects, Inc.

This Dialogue begins at the widely-published contemporary dream home of landscape architect Susan Van Atta and her architect-husband Ken Radtkey, a laboratory for all their design ideas, which anchors a one-acre hillside site in Montecito with views to the Pacific Ocean. The LEED Platinum home’s solar panels supply all the electricity, fire-resistant green roofs are part insulation, part water collectors, and the open, airy and tranquil environment is complemented by a landscape that is beautiful, sustainable, and productive.  The visit will include coffee and croissants with Ken’s fig jam.

The Dialogue continues at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, an institution with which Van Atta has been involved for 40 years.  The 78-acre property, incorporated as a botanic garden in 1939, is notable for work done there by landscape architects Beatrix Farrand and Lockwood deForest. Van Atta is a leading authority on the garden; she prepared its Cultural Landscape Master Plan and has extensive knowledge of the site's rich history and natural flora.  The visit will include local wine and cheese in the new Island Garden with panoramic views of the Channel Islands.

4.0 LA CES™ Professional development hours will be available to attendees.

“Light/Breeze House and Garden”
Howard Rosen, architect, and Pamela Palmer, ASLA, of ARTECHO Architecture and Landscape Architecture in dialogue with Lisa Gimmy of Lisa Gimmy Landscape Architecture

The Light/Breeze House and Garden features a remodeled 1939 house set on a gentle slope in Mar Vista, with views out across tree tops toward the Pacific Ocean.

The Japanese concept of “hide and reveal” is experienced both spatially and temporally.

A flight of steps through a bamboo forest leads to a terrace populated by Howard’s succulent collection.  The concept of home as garden pavilion becomes evident when, at the front door, one sees through the house to the back yard.  Walls and ceilings of the house were removed to reveal an Origami-like volume for living now infused with light and air.  Foliage in the front yard captures the ocean breeze, which is then funneled through the house to naturally condition the air.  Walls are scrims of varying transparencies, which record ever-shifting atmospheric moods while bringing actual and projected images of the garden into ones momentary experience.

Integrating new with existing two and three-dimensional geometries resulted in the creation of a spatial framework whose source is revealed when the shape of the pool becomes visible.

This home and garden is more relaxed and modest than Pam and Howard’s professional work. It is where they nourish and are nourished.  You are invited to experience the house and garden as designed, for an intimate gathering of food, wine and meaningful conversation with a discussion led by Landscape Architect and friend, Lisa Gimmy

2.5 LA CES™ Professional development hours will be available to attendees.

Sunday, May 21, 4:00 - 6:00pm | Pasadena
Nord Eriksson, ASLA, of EPTDesign in dialogue with Lisa Gimmy of Lisa Gimmy Landscape Architecture

Equal parts laboratory and sanctuary, the gardens surrounding landscape architect Nord Eriksson’s Pasadena home bring together a lifetime of influences. The 1949 ranch-style home won over Nord and his family six years ago and offered the chance to develop artful garden rooms on the 18,000 square foot lot. Largely a blank slate, the grounds beckoned for something new. Six years later, hints of Nord’s appreciation of Scandinavian, Japanese, and Mediterranean design can be found in the remade gardens.

The gently sloping land, anchored by a magnificent native Englemann Oak, was terraced to create interest, retain rainwater, and create a variety of spaces for family life and entertaining. A tapestry of textural paving weaves throughout… concrete, brick, slate, gravel and pebble are crafted into a soulful mix. Walls of arroyo cobble and concrete block trace lines in the garden, originally laid out by pioneering landscape architect Edward Hunstman-Trout.  A sojourn to Spain and Mallorca allowed Nord to study resilient landscapes and influenced his design of the lap pool and plantings of the rear gardens. In the front yard, ivy has been replaced by a mix of grasses and salvia’s with accents of agaves’ and aloes.

Today, the garden grows, teaches lessons, and brings deep satisfaction. It’s a joy to come home to…and a gift to share.
