The campus for non-profit arts organization Amant encompasses exhibition galleries, a performance space, a bookstore and café, offices, and a studio residency, spread across three contiguous addresses. Creating a cohesive whole from these distinct programmatic spaces posed a challenge, but landscape architects Future Green Studio achieved a feeling of unity through the creation of a series of courtyard spaces. The largest courtyard, between the gallery and residency spaces at 306 Maujer Street, is anchored by a concrete terrace set within a clearing framed by the palette of shrubs and perennials that buffer the private from the public. A series of smaller courtyards are animated by trees placed strategically to cast playful shadows on the ground and building facades.
Reflecting Amant’s goal to slow down the art-making process, the landscape’s calming palette of color and material offers a tranquil space for pause and reflection.
The aggregate used for the custom concrete terrace incorporates found construction materials that have been refined for their new purpose. Custom, pre-cast concrete steppingstones in biomorphic shapes are designed as sculptural elements that guide visitors through a field of dark gray stone bound by shrubs and perennials. The various concrete elements in the landscape are intentionally in dialogue with the beautifully textured and detailed concrete facades of each building designed by SO-IL. The plant palette is inspired by the volunteer urban plants found in the nearby lots and roadsides of Brooklyn, but is carefully curated with season of bloom, color, and texture in mind.
This Garden Dialogue will be led by Nancy Seaton from Future Green Studio.
