Garden Dialogues 2023: St. Helena, CA

St. Helena, CA

Faust Winery, St. Helena, CA | 3:00 – 4:00 PM

Surfacedesign’s work at Faust Winery focused on using gradients of color to shape an identity for each of the landscape's distinct spaces. Visitors enter at the base of the Vineyard Path, walking through a red-orange to yellow-orange palette of perennials towards the Speakeasy Garden, defined by a grove of mature shade trees and plantings of yellow-orange perennials. Nearby stairs lead to the Welcome Terrace, where a grassy amphitheater is accented by concentrations of yellow plantings.

The Victorian Garden features three large elm trees for shade and movable furniture allowing visitors access to the scenic overlook.  The adjacent Grassy Knoll is a hillside amphitheater with four mature olive trees (relocated from an on-site olive grove) and borrowed views throughout the site.

The final garden space is the Tasting Garden, where exuberant planted beds in red and orange palettes border a large concrete and gravel plaza shaded by a grove of mature trees.

Mt. Veeder, St. Helena, CA | 4:00 – 5:00 PM

Mount Veeder is Surfacedesign partners James Lord and Roderick Wyllie’s home in Napa, with Dry Creek running along the edge of the property. Reclaimed granite pavers are seeded with local wildflowers to create a lush and seasonally vibrant garden that feels like it is emerging from the patio itself. Varieties of poppies, fox gloves, and hollyhocks spill out over the patio in a cultivated wildness that is colorful and ephemeral.
