Garden Dialogues 2023: Winnetka, IL

Winnetka, IL

Join TCLF and Hoerr Schaudt to explore an extraordinary private residence. Built in 1857, it's Winnetka, IL's oldest home, the 2.5-are property is set into a hillside with numerous terraced "galleries" and expansive views of Lake Michigan, and there's a private funicular that goes down to the lake.

The immediate gardens surrounding this Georgian-style mansion embrace its history with traditional elements that are reminiscent of its classical origins. Manicured gardens continue from the property's entrance into the side yard, where a family terrace is outlined by a white trellis and softened by verdant plantings with a seasonal rotation of pink and purple annuals.

Past the family terrace parterre, a stone walkway leads to a bocce court, surrounded by boxwood hedges and flanked at the far end by one of the owner's curated pieces—an ornate archway that focuses all eyes on the stunning lake view. Continuing down the bluff, the landscape seamlessly transitions into an Italianate style with darker stonework, meandering retaining walls, and more naturalistic, cascading plantings.

The property is a celebration of history and home, and a space redefined for 21st-century family gatherings and entertainment.
