Longview features a home and landscape on two acres of a former horse farm. The design palette balances rusticity and refinement and features a rich textural mix of plant materials that enhance the serenity of the overall environment, and deftly references the site's equestrian roots. Fescue meadows flourish around the property, and an expanse of shorter native grasses frame the house in a refined reference to the pasture that formerly occupied the site.

LaGuardia Design skillfully edited and refined a tree-filled site in Bridgehampton on which James Merrell Architects updated an old cottage, expanding it to include a modern, flat-roofed addition. The “gardener’s garden” includes a raised bed vegetable garden and a wildflower meadow. The main entry courtyard boasts a 50-year-old Green Japanese Maple set in a bed of Asarum and surrounded by specimen Hinoki Cypress. A bluestone walkway passes between two, low stone walls and meanders through a courtyard.

The 5.5-acre Dune Meadow residence sandwiched between the Atlantic Ocean and Shinnecock Bay features a masterful restoration of two degraded ecosystems … and the result looks completely natural. A striking new residence replaced a 60-year-old home, a sequence of dunes was stabilized with native plantings (including 120,000 plants of American Beach Grass), and a tidal wetland between the house and the bay was restored. The project serves as a prototype for the natural progression and recovery of ecologically critical landscapes.
