Charles Birnbaum, founder and president of the Washington, D.C.-based Cultural Landscape Foundation and a former co-chairman of the National Association for Olmsted Parks, said he doesn’t understand why the granite art is to be permanent.

“I would say that its foundation is flawed if it has to be permanent,” he said. It should be temporary, tread lightly, offer an interpretative impact and then go away, he said. Other significant Olmsted or historic designed landscapes in the U.S. have temporary art exhibits, he said.
