In Jackson Park, Private Money Begins to Reshape a Public Jewel

The Cultural Landscape Foundation, a research and educational organization, classifies the linked South Side parks, which straddle the University of Chicago campus, as "at risk." "It seems to be open season on open space," said Charles Birnbaum, president and chief executive of the Washington-based foundation. "We've now seen this in two mayoral administrations in the city of Chicago. You want to put a building in a park — you offer up a South Park. That's what's been happening."
