Fownes House Garden

The Fownes House Garden was designed in 1925 by brothers Ernest and Julius Morell to accompany the seasonal cottage of Pittsburgh businessman W.C. Fownes, Jr. Created during the first subdivision of Knollwood, the grounds of the estate contain a large greenhouse, a guesthouse, a large garage with a chauffeur's apartment, and a swimming pool in addition to the Colonial Revival house and elaborate terraced gardens. The Morells came to Southern Pines from Harrisburg where they established their Holly Tree Nursery sometime in the early 1900s. Described as a skilled planters and botanists, the garden served as a show place for the Morells, originally exhibiting about a hundred different imported specimens.
