Positive News in the Effort to Save Washington State’s Old Red Brick Road
Thanks to the efforts of the community and supporting organizations like TCLF, development plans threatening the Old Red Brick Road have been withdrawn by the developer. This marks an important but perhaps only temporary victory in the fight to preserve the road and its surrounding landscape.
County officials were informed of the developer’s intent to withdraw plans days before a much anticipated public meeting on the topic and just prior to the publication of a local newspaper article on the proposed development and opposition. The change in plans prompted the cancellation of both the meeting and the article.
Enforcement action on the property is still active, however, and the county has confirmed that future permit applications will not be considered until enforcement issues are resolved. The community is closely following all aspects of the enforcement case and expects the developer to attempt to resolve the case as quickly as possible before pursuing development again.
Ongoing Help Needed
The community still maintains its position that county code strictly limits the scope of any future development along the road but is pursuing additional protection for the Old Red Brick Road and its surroundings to add to and clarify the existing laws.
Supporters are still encouraged to write to Dow Constantine, the King County Executive to request that the developer be held accountable for the code violations and to express support for additional protections of the Old Red Brick Road by email at kcexec@kingcounty.gov or mail at:
