TCLF Launches Major Upgrades to What's Out There – New Mapping Component and Easier Searches

TCLF's What’s Out There database of designed landscapes has introduced several major improvements including a new mapping component and easier searches. Users can now search by city and zip code, while the mapping component also shows nearby What’s Out There sites. The new features also allow for greater use by hand-held devices.

What’s Out There, the first, free, searchable online database of America’s designed landscape was launched in October 2009 and today features more than 1,000 entries profusely illustrated with over 7,000 photographs. The new features have been added to the “Advanced Search” section of the database, and complement the existing search categories of Landscape Name, Type, Style and Designer. Searches will now yield even more precise results in list or map form.

Here are just a few examples:

If you are in a place like downtown Chicago, the new advanced search will yield 46 landscapes within 10 miles of your location.

If you are interested in a designer’s national body of work, such as Dan Kiley, a search on his name reveals 24 sites across the country, organized on the map or in an alphabetical list.

The new What’s Out There components were funded by generous grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and Richard H. Driehaus Foundation, and developed by Oviatt Media and Message Agency.
