Nine Mile Canyon

READ ABOUT THE THREAT

The site of thousands of prehistoric Native American rock art panels dating back over a 1,000 years, Nine Mile Canyon boasts the densest collection of such panels in the country. The petroglyphs and pictographs, some located on cliff faces more than 100 feet above ground, depict animals, hunting scenes, and godlike figures and are attributed to the Archaic, Fremont, and Ute people. The canyon, actually 40 miles in length, is also home to extensive archeological sites including pit houses, granaries, and former village locations. During the 19th century, fur trappers and the United States military utilized the canyon, installing stagecoach stations, iron telegraph poles, and shelters that still exist today.
