Established in 1958 as Venturi, Cope and Lippincott and formerly known as Venturi, Rauch and Scott Brown, the firm's principals are Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown. With a philosophy rooted in social planning, contextual design, and environmental responsibility, the firm’s diverse projects include urban planning and designs for decorative arts, residences, and museums, with academic planning as a major focus. They have won numerous awards, including the Presidential Design Award for Franklin Court, and have published extensively on modern architecture and planning, including the groundbreaking Learning from Las Vegas, published in 1972. Their sensitivity for contextual design is evident in their plan for Freedom Plaza in Washington, D.C., and their master plans for the historic Washington Avenue district in Miami Beach, Florida, and The Strand in Galveston, Texas. Robert Venturi died on September 18, 2018, at the age of 93.
