About In Italy: Sketches and Drawings

Artists and designers have recorded places, people, and life in drawings and sketchbooks for centuries. Over the past fifty years, Laurie Olin, one of America’s most distinguished landscape architects, has recorded aspects of life and the environment in Italy: its cities and countryside, streets and cafes, ancient ruins, art, architecture, people, villas, and gardens—civic and domestic, humble to grand, things of interest to his designer’s eye— taking the time to see carefully. Rome in its seasons, agriculture in Umbria and Tuscany, trees, food, and fountains, all are noted over the years in watercolor or pen and ink. Originally made in the personal pleasure of merely being there as well as self-education, this selection from many sketchbooks and drawings is accompanied with introductory notes and remarks for different regions including Rome, Turin, Venice, Tuscany, Umbria, Lazio, Campania, and Sicily.

Purchase by April 24, 2024 to receive a signed copy.

About 30 Trees: And Why Landscape Architects Love Them

30 Trees presents the favorite trees of 30 internationally renowned landscape architects including Laurie Olin, Elizabeth Mossop, Gary Hilderbrand, Cannon Ivers, and Shannon Nichol. In each case, the designers describe the characteristics that represent the essence of the selected tree, the designed landscapes they associate with it, and how it was used in completed projects.

These personal insights are complemented by five scholarly essays on criteria such as typology, ecology, maintenance, and seasons that are critical in matching trees to landscapes. Additionally, the book includes a botanical description of each species mentioned.

The result is a compendium of insights into tree species and the use of trees in landscape architecture. This book will be of interest to professionals and amateurs alike.
