TCLF Educational Programs Raise $80,000 Thanks to ASLA Annual Meeting Participants

The Cultural Landscape Foundation (TCLF) is pleased to announce the myriad events held in concert with this year’s American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) Annual Meeting were a tremendous success, raising $80,000 for the Foundation’s educational programs. The meeting, which took place in Washington, D.C. from September 9th to 12th, was one of the most diverse events to date and TCLF was extremely pleased to be a part of it all.

Event highlights include:

Moveable Feast & James van Sweden Oral History Module Premier
The sold-out Moveable Feast garden excursion, in honor of the life and work of James van Sweden, and sponsored by Barbara and Tim Downs, brought in nearly $40,000 for TCLF’s Pioneers of American Landscape design initiative. The walking tour included visits to three Georgetown gardens designed by Mr. van Sweden and Oehme, van Sweden & Associates, Inc., and concluded with a luncheon hosted by Arturo and Hilda Brillembourg in their garden. Following the morning events, TCLF hosted the premier of the Pioneers Oral History module on Mr. van Sweden at the Letelier Theater. The half hour, specially-edited video titled “Bold, Romantic Landscape Architect” included comments by Mr. van Sweden himself and was followed by a panel discussion among clients and friends Barbara Downs, Barbara Slifka, and Hilda Brillembourg.

Silent Auction
In total, 65 works by more than 50 artists were auctioned over two days. The auction venue was well-situated within the EXPO Hall and the reaction to the breadth and diversity of the work was extremely positive. Along with veteran and emerging landscape architects, more than a dozen professional photographers and other artists submitted their work to the event. Thanks to our generous contributors and bidders as well as our Presenting Sponsor, Monrovia, TCLF earned over $40,000 during this sixth annual Silent Auction.

ASLA Award
During Monday’s awards ceremony, ASLA presented TCLF with the Award of Excellence in the Communications category for TCLF’s ongoing Pioneers of American Landscape Design Oral History series. The series, which most recently includes the James van Sweden module, chronicles the lives and careers of landscape architects who have helped shape the American landscape. TCLF President, Charles Birnbaum, and Project Manager, Nancy Slade, were there to receive the award.

Many thanks to all of you that participated in this events and, to ASLA for their generous support of TCLF.
