Military Institution
Evolving in response to the needs of national security and defense, military landscapes can often represent multiple generations of construction and development. They include several landscape types that reflect the military history of the nation including bases (residential and not), fortifications, historic battlefields, cemeteries, memorial or commemorative sites, and decommissioned Department of Defense sites. Military culture traditionally values hierarchy, uniformity, discipline, utility, ceremony and patriotism. These physically manifest throughout the landscape, from the site plan to the design details. The historic functional and ceremonial core of a base is the parade deck, the central organizing feature of the military campus. Similarly, the commissary and post-exchange, whether a single building or cluster of buildings, provide the center of material commerce for both the individual and the larger military unit.
