Launched in Boston’s South End by Craig Halvorson in 1980 and incorporated in 1983, this landscape architecture and planning firm was renamed Halvorson Design Partnership in 2002. Throughout its various iterations, the firm focused on producing engaging landscapes rooted in fundamental design principals and the dynamism of nature. Early projects included numerous parks and open spaces in Cambridge and Boston, campus improvements for Harvard University, and the master plan for the historic Mount Auburn Cemetery. The firm completed several projects at the cemetery over the course of decades, including Birch Gardens, the new Asa Gray Garden, and the Bigelow Chapel expansion with William Rawn Architects. Other notable work includes the Hancock Adams Common in Quincy, Massachusetts; Clippership Wharf, a resilient waterfront development that introduced the first living shoreline to Boston’s urban harbor; Center City Park in Greensboro, North Carolina; the Norman B. Leventhal Park at Post Office Square in Boston (winner of the Landmark Award from the American Society of Landscape Architects; ASLA); and South Boston Maritime Park. Halvorson also collaborated on master plans for the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway and the Charles River Basin in Boston; the DeCordova Museum master plan and museum expansion in Lincoln, Massachusetts; and Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota. A decade after completing the master plan, Halvorson designed the landscape for the new Lakewood Cemetery mausoleum, which received the 2013 ASLA Award of Excellence in the Design Category, for its thoughtful integration into the cemetery’s historic setting. In 2020 Halvorson joined the engineering and design firm Tighe & Bond and now practices under the name Halvorson | Tighe & Bond Studio.
