Mark H. Hough, FASLA
University Landscape Architect, Duke University


Mark H. HoughMark H. Hough, FASLA, has been the University Landscape Architect at Duke University since 2000. He is involved in all aspects of design, planning, historic preservation, and natural-resource management on the Olmsted Brothers-designed campus. Prior to working at Duke University, he worked at the Central Park Conservancy in New York City, where he developed a passion for landscape stewardship. Mr. Hough is a prolific writer and speaks frequently at conferences and symposia about cultural landscapes, campuses, urban design, and the role of the client in the design process. He is a frequent contributor to Landscape Architecture Magazine and has written for numerous other publications, including The Chronicle of Higher Education, Places Journal, and the website Planetizen. In 2011 Hough was awarded the Bradford Williams Medal by the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) for excellence in writing about landscape. He was recognized as a Fellow of the ASLA in 2014.
